Both Donald Trump And Ron DeSantis Are Both Models For Republican Leaders
There is more than one way to look at this ‘rivalry’ between Trump and DeSantis.
GALLAGHER: It’s been fun fielding reactions to President Trump’s speech last night and throwing his hat in the ring for 2024. A lot of people have mixed reactions. A lot of people are enthusiastic. My pal Mark Davis in Dallas broke this down to a few categories. You’re either all in, all Trump, all the time. No way, no how is anyone else going to challenge him. You are sort of ambivalent. Well if he gets the nomination you’ll vote for him, but not necessarily you’re number one pick or you are anybody, but Trump. You’re DeSantis, you’re Glenn Youngkin, Tim Scott, Nikki Haley, Mike Pompeo. Who knows. Who knows. What I do know is that the Trump-DeSantis rivalry is being portrayed as this awful awful thing. I admit I used to dread the prospect of the two of them butting heads. But the more I think about it, I realize it is a pretty healthy process. That is what primaries are for. If they are going to be competitors, they are going to be competitors. So be it. Kellyanne Conway last night pointed it out on Jesse Watters’ show that there is another way to look at this Trump-DeSantis rivalry. That is that both men are really good for the future of the Republican party nationally.
CONWAY: “Here is how I look at Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump. The new model for Republican Party for conservative leaders. You don’t take it, you don’t absorb it, you don’t comply, you don’t reply when you are getting attacked, you fight back and you fight back on behalf of the people. So I hope we never go back to the mealy-mouthed, mushy pushovers before who didn’t realize that the Democrats who ended up beating them would eat your two eyeballs like grapes if you gave them the opportunity. So, I like that about them. The other thing I like about both of them is that they have the same agenda, same record of accomplishments, one for a state, one for a whole country. But they are both — DeSantis and Trump are both on the front lines for freedom. They are both stewards of freedom, of lower taxes, of fewer regulations, of border security, of national security.
GALLAGHER: That is a healthy way to look at it. She’s right. We have a bountiful of riches here with Trump and DeSantis emerging as Republican candidates. Both of them in a way are a repudiation of ‘country club Republicanism’.
