Sen. Tommy Tuberville Is Under Attack For Not Wanting The Military To Fund Abortions
Sen. Tommy Tuberville responded to being told he is associated with terrorism and communism over his abortion views.
GALLAGHER: For me, life is everything. And Tommy Tuberville, the Alabama Republican senator, is under fire from the Left and even some on the Right for believing that the Pentagon should be out of the abortion business. What a crazy idea. Tommy Tuberville doesn’t want the military to fund abortions and he’s holding up promotions because of the position he’s in. And there are people who are going bat crap crazy over it. Now, if you’re a pro-life conservative, how are you not on the side of Tommy Tuberville? Is there someone who’s going to have to enlighten me. You think some commander’s promotion is more important than fighting for the unborn? Forgetting the Pentagon and the military out of the abortion business. My gosh. Here was Tommy Tuberville last night with Laura Ingraham on Fox News.
TUBERVILLE: Well, they’re saying readiness is being hampered here. Laura, they are saying that generals and admirals are the most important. The most important people we have in the military are the sergeants, the corporals, the privates, the second lieutenants, the first lieutenants, the people who actually do the work, not the people that ride around in these black limousines in Washington, D.C. and have a nice office over at the Pentagon. the Pentagon is way too big as it is. We need to send more money back down to the people who actually do the work because we have way too many leaders at the top and it is getting way out of control.
GALLAGHER: He goes on to say, and this is where he kind of explains the policy. How about let’s get the military out of funding abortions, which, by the way, is illegal? Ever heard of the Hyde Amendment? Taxpayers shouldn’t be funding abortions for people in the military. What a crazy idea as Senator Tuberville goes on to explain why he is holding up promoting military commanders on behalf of the unborn.
TUBERVILLE: “ In 1985, Joe Biden voted for this policy in the military, this abortion policy. It’s been great. They have had no problems. I asked them in a hearing, ‘Okay, tell me the problem. Let me see the list and letters of everybody complaining about this.’ Zero. Zero complaints. But now, because of Roe-Wade, they want all federal employees — “
INGRAHAM: “Oh, it’s just political. They want the issue for 2024. Yes?”
TUBERVILLE: “Exactly.”
INGRAHAM: “Is there anything stopping them from bringing any of these nominees, especially in supposedly really important positions, to a vote? Like, they just took five weeks off, right? Four weeks off?”
TUBERVILLE: “Yeah. And it’d take about three hours to do one nominee, which is fine — “
INGRAHAM: “So they’re not doing it why, again, senator?”
TUBERVILLE: “Well, because they don’t want to put anybody in harm’s way.”
INGRAHAM: “Heaven forbid senators have to actually defend their votes on particular nominees.”
TUBERVILLE: “But they can bring this policy, take it back. I told them, ‘Just take the policy back and go back to the old policy, bring it to a vote and we will vote on it. Whichever way it goes, I’m fine.’”
INGRAHAM: “They don’t want any accountability?”
TUBERVILLE: “They don’t want any vote on this because, as you said, there is going to be bad votes on the Democratic side.” I mean, it’s like establishment Republicans are howling at this guy because he’s exposing them for the squishes. They are on the issue of life. I am mystified if someone can explain to me why Senator Tommy Tuberville deserves the scorn and the hate that’s coming down on him.
GALLAGHER: I mean, I get it from the left. The Left wants the military to fund abortions. You think the Left? You think Democrats care about the United States military paying for the abortions of each of its rank and file? Of course not. But for Republicans to condemn Tommy Tuberville, what’s wrong with these people? Here’s the Navy secretary. Listen to this. The Navy, the secretary of the Navy, Carlos del Toro, sat down with CNN’s Jake Tapper. And listen to what he accused Tommy Tuberville of.
DEL TORO: You know, some I talked to someone who was born in a communist country. I would have never imagined that actually one of our own senators would actually be aiding and abetting communist and other autocratic regimes around the world. This is having a real negative impact, and we’ll continue to have a real negative impact on our combat readiness. And that’s what the American people truly need to understand.
GALLAGHER: Aiding and abetting communists around the world. What in the world. Associating Tuberville with terrorism and communism. Why are these people hysterical? Well, it’s simple. You don’t challenge abortions. You don’t do anything to get in the way of women wanting to get an abortion. Check out. Here’s Senator Tuberville’s reaction to the garbage accusation that Tuberville is somehow associated with terrorism and communism.
TUBERVILLE: Well, Laura, I grew up in a military family. My dad was career military, died on active duty. There’s no bigger fan of the military than me up here. I’m on Armed Services Committee. I didn’t think I would come up here and ever be associated with terrorism and communism as a United States senator. That’s wrong. This is coming from the talking heads of the White House. These guys, I know them, all the secretaries, I know them, dealt with them, had them in my office, they are good guys but they are using the words that’s coming from the White House. Nobody has told them ‘no’ in three years, okay?
GALLAGHER: I’m real simple. I got a real simple question here. Explain to me how any Republican who calls themselves pro-life is attacking Tommy Tuberville.
