Some Conservatives Are Going After Trump For His Recent Abortion Comments

Share

Ben Shapiro called Trump’s recent comments on abortion ‘egregious’.

GALLAGHER: I want you to hear somebody I respect very deeply. Ben Shapiro, very popular podcaster. Listen to what Ben said about Trump’s comments to Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press, where Trump criticized Florida’s heartbeat bill.

SHAPIRO: He made a comment suggesting that heartbeat bills like to protect the lives of the unborn in states are terrible, which is not only not pro-life, it’s an awful thing to say. It’s one thing to say that, tactically speaking, as president of the United States, I’m going to try to reach as much consensus as possible and gradually move the line back on abortion. So accustom the American people to protecting life, because if we move too far, too fast, then the snap back is going to be dramatic, as we saw in Kansas. That’s a that’s a pragmatic question and it’s a case you can make. It’s not what Trump says. What Trump actually says about abortion in this interview is morally egregious. He says that heartbeat bills to, you know, protect babies in the womb past week five, week six. Those are terrible. That’s the thing, he says.

GALLAGHER: Now Ben calls Trump and his remarks on this egregious. Listen to the analysis from Politico headlined Biden World Fears Trump May Muddy the Waters on Abortion. When NBC published excerpts of Trump’s interview, Trump called Florida Governor Desantis’s six week abortion ban terrible and claimed to seek peace on the issue. He told Kristen Welker, I’m going to come together with all groups. We’re going to have something that’s acceptable for Biden world. This was a flashing red light. The former president, who has called himself the most pro-life president in history and whose appointment of three conservative justices paved the way for Roe v. Wade to be overturned was attempting in their minds to weasel himself into a more moderate position on an issue proven to be a vulnerability for the Republican Party. Aides and allies of the president quickly moved to try to shape the media’s coverage of the comments. Mainly, they admonished stories that didn’t, in their estimation. Note that Trump was, in the words of spokesperson Amr Moussa. The reason states across the country are able to ban abortion. Incidentally, that’s true. Trump is the reason states are able to, should they choose to ban abortion. I believe that the assertion that Donald Trump is the most pro-life president in my lifetime is true. It’s absolutely correct. But here’s the analysis from Politico that gets very, very interesting. The aggressive pushback underscored two major elements of the current political landscape. The general election is basically begun, and Democrats continue to see abortion as the key to keeping the White House. We cannot with as Americans, with our eyes wide open, we cannot ignore this political reality. Let me repeat it. Democrats continue to see abortion as the key to keeping the White House. After the full interview aired, the Trump campaign aired a response from campaign manager Julie Chavez. Rodriguez, citing Trump’s own boasts about his ability to kill Roe. These are the I’m sorry, this is the Democrat response. The Democrats sent along a fact sheet pushing back not just at Trump, but at the press. The campaign’s army of allies responded, This is dangerous. We cannot let Trump off the hook for his record. So Democrats essentially are saying that Trump is trying to appeal to a more moderate approach to the contentious abortion debate. And according to Politico, many Democrats are afraid it’s going to work. One 800 655. Mike, 14 past the hour. Here’s Nebraska Text message on the Mypillow text line. Is it possible with Trump’s comments we’re looking at something that’s part of the art of the deal?
