Sen. Lindsey Graham Seems Agonized Over The Debt Ceiling Agreement

Share

Sen. Lindsey Graham and the Democrats appear to be very upset with the debt ceiling agreement that McCarthy came to with Biden.

GALLAGHER: I don’t think most people are riveted by the debt ceiling debate. We know that we’re stuck in out of control spending. It’s frustrating, it’s annoying, it’s worrisome, but I don’t think most people begin or end their day, agonizing over the details of the debt ceiling. Lindsey Graham, however, very angry about it. Here he was over the weekend on Fox News.

GRAHAM: I am a Republican from the Reagan camp. Ronald Reagan would not do this to our military. The defense team of Joe Biden I’ve lost faith in a long time ago. I’ve been making light of the Biden budget as being inadequate, a win for China, and if you ask me now to swallow it because of the debt ceiling, you can forget it. The number one job of every member of Congress should be to defend a nation. The Biden defense budget does not do it. Kevin has a hard job. I like him a lot. But my good friend John McCain voted for sequestration in 2011 thinking we would never do the cuts that we actually did. Two years later, he says it’s the worst vote he ever made. We are doing the same thing all over again in the name of raising the debt ceiling. We should raise the debt ceiling, but we should not cripple the military’s ability to defend the nation as a trade-off. Spending below inflation is not fully funding the military. Cutting the size of the navy only helps China.

GALLAGHER: Of course we are not crippling the military’s ability to defend the nation. This is why we lose. Republicans are so quick to snatch defeat right out of the jaws of victory. This isn’t an over the top victory for the Republican party by any stretch of the imagination. This is a Republican Speaker of the House getting something done that has not been done before on many levels. Did Kevin McCarthy get everything he wanted? Of course not. You think the Democrats are happy? Listen to this Congressman from Connecticut. This is Jim Himes talking to Shannon Bream Sunday on Fox News confirming what Kevin McCarthy said about Hakeem Jeffires complaining that nothing the Democrats wanted was in this bill.

HIMES: I think there are two problems with the bill. Number one is, yeah, none of the things in the bill are Democratic priorities. You know what those priorities are because in the last two years when we controlled the House, we capped insulin at $35 for seniors, we did drug price controls, we passed the biggest infrastructure investment in our country ever, we addressed climate change. Those are our priorities and not a single one of them are in the bill. That is not a surprise given that we are now in the minority, but the obvious point here — and the Speaker didn’t say this — the reason it had some traction with Democrats is that it’s a very small bill.
