The Republican Party Is Soul Searching Right Now
Does there appear to be a disconnect between America-First Republicans and the more country club type Republicans?
GALLAGHER: How about a Republican Civil War? You have brawlers like Marjorie Taylor Greene who say “bring it on”.
TAYLOR GREENE: “We’re going to fight it out. And I’m telling you, I have always said I’m not afraid of the civil war in the GOP. I lean into it. You want to know why? I want to do everything I can to do my part within our conference to force the Republican Party to be the party that is America first and saves this country.”
GALLAGHER: It does seem to me a real disconnect between America-First Republicans and the globalist and the elitists and the country club types who are very happy there was not a huge red wave last week. That to me. People like Josh Hawley who for many people is a huge threat to the status quo. If you go back to 2016 when Trump came down the escalator, this was a disruptor. This was a guy who took on the establishment and shook things up. Josh Hawley is in that mold. The Senator from Missouri. Here is what he said last night visiting with Tulsi Gabbard who has been named a Fox News Channel contributor. She was guest hosting for Tucker Carlson last night. Here was Sen. Hawley and what he said to Tulsi.
HAWLEY: “Well, we need good, strong, independent leadership that actually listens to voters and doesn’t just listen to the Washington lobbyists. And I’ll just tell you, when it comes to the GOP, the Washington Republicanism that cares more about Wall Street than it does working people. It’s time for that to come to an end. The Washington Republicanism that’s all about adventures abroad and the neoconservatism of these global wars, not focused on working people in this country, it needs to come to an end. I think what voters are asking us to do is pretty clear. Secure our streets, you know, let’s put new cops on the street, 100,000 of them. Secure the borders. Stop the indoctrination of our children and bring jobs back to this country. It used to be you could support a family on one good wage. You can’t do that anymore in this country because of the ruinous trade policies that unfortunately both parties have supported. That has to come to an end. Republicans have to be the party of working people and working class culture. That what we’re fighting for.”
GALLAGHER: He seems to me to be the kind of Republican that should have a real important seat at the table, but I also believe that there ought to be a conversation that involves a lot of different Republicans. We can’t be exclusionary. Right now, if we start trying to take each other. We’re going to face the prospect of never winning again.
